Ashley Umhoefer of Weston was the all-around champion in her age division at the 2018 YMCA Northeast Regional Championships held May 11-13 in Augusta, Maine. Competing in the Level 6, Ages 9-11 division, she took home the first-place all-around trophy along with the title of vault champion (9.325). She was also second on bars (9.4) and third on beam (9.4), and scored 9.2 on floor. Her performance helped the Wilton Y gymnastics Level 6 squad finish fourth out of 21 teams at the meet.
The rain may have forced several events to be cancelled, but it hardly dampened spirits at the Special Olympics Connecticut 2018 Southern Time Trials on Saturday at Weston High School. Athletes who have been training hard for months weren’t about to let the weather get in their way. “That’s the beautiful thing. The final session of Weston Youth Wrestling was held on March 23 in Weston High School Old Gym. The program, which ran on four Fridays in March, was open to boys and girls in grades 2-8. The Wilton Y gymnastics team hosted the 2018 Connecticut Southern League championships over the March 3-4 weekend, with more than 300 gymnasts and their respective spectators converging in the gym over six sessions. Ashley Umhoefer of Weston helped the Wilton Level 6 team take second place all-around. The Weston fourth grade girls developmental travel basketball team, the Weston Waffles, had a winning record this season of 12-5, ending the season with an eight-game winning streak. The team had a slow start with only two players having any prior competitive experience, and struggled with fundamentals and teamwork early in the season. But with hard work and amazing coaching from coaches Ray Banks and Larry Brown, the Waffles succeeded as a team, learned teamwork, and gained skills and confidence individually. The Weston 6B Gold boys basketball team won second place in the Fairfield County Basketball League championship tournament for their division this past weekend. Weston reached the finals with wins over Southport/Wakeman and Bristol, before losing to Prospect in the finals, 36-31. The team, which featured Will Bello, Andrew Brentano, Stephen Brentano, Jackson Bryce, Colby Lintell, Liam Morvillo, Stephen Polizzi, Nick Possick, Zach Selden and Jamie Stack, was coached by Marcus Cox and Ty Staples-Santos.
The National Synchronized Skating Championships were a rousing success for three Weston girls and their ice skating teams. The three girls – Arielle Belluck, Jillian Belluck and Abigail Cohen – skate for the Skyliners Synchronized Skating Team, and each of their teams medaled at the national championships in Portland, Ore., last week. Three wrestlers from the Redding Easton Wrestling Club reached the finals and placed second in their weight classes at the Western Connecticut Elementary League Championships on Saturday at Danbury PAL Building. The youth wrestling tournament drew a field of 300 elementary school-aged wrestlers. Henry Morris, a second-year wrestler competing in the 55-pound weight class, won his first two matches.
