Boys tennis: Inaugural Weston High Tennis Open set for Aug. 23

August is not a month typically associated with high-school tennis in Connecticut. Recent Weston High graduate Stephen Blinder is looking to change that, while also raising money for a worthy cause. Blinder, a former member of the Trojans’ boys tennis team, is organizing the inaugural Weston High School Tennis Open, set to run Aug. 23-26 at the Weston High hard courts, for incoming and current high-school age boys. The single-elimination tournament entry fee is $30 and proceeds will benefit Norwalk Grassroots Tennis & Education. Bara, Baisley win Weston Lacrosse Club Merit Award

In 2010, the Weston Lacrosse Club established the Weston High School Merit Award in order to honor one senior class member from each of the Weston High School boys and girls lacrosse teams each season. This year’s recipients are Sofia Bara and Jason Baisley. Tomasiewicz will be Weston’s first county Sports Hall of Fame inductee

Claire Beth ‘C.B.’ Tomasiewicz Nogay, one of the area’s greatest all-around female athletes, will be Weston’s first-ever inductee into the Fairfield County Sports Hall of Fame. She was one of six prominent sports figures announced last week as this year’s class of inductees. Others being honored are A.J. Mleczko Griswold of New Canaan, Travis Simms of Norwalk, Rashamel Jones of Stamford, John Kuczo of Stamford, and and the late Paul Kuczo Sr. of Stamford.   The new head coach of the Joel Barlow boys basketball team won’t need a tour of the school. Pat Yerina, who previously coached the Falcons for five seasons in the late 1980s and early 1990s, has been hired to replace Matt Whelan. Whelan recently announced he was leaving to become head coach of the Norwalk High boys basketball team. Yerina, a former standout player at Fairfield University, has been the head coach at Bunnell High in Stratford for the last 21 years. Weston boys track: Lautenbach sixth at Open

The Weston boys track and field team closed out the season with three postseason meets, capped off by the New England championships earlier this month. The Trojans scored a total of 33.5 points to finish in seventh place at the Class MM meet on May 30 at Middletown High School. Perennial power Hillhouse captured the championship with 81.5 points. The best finished was turned in by senior captain Tim Lautenbach, who was second in the 1600 meters in 4:24.51, with sophomore Kevin Crowley taking seventh in 4:43.44. The Weston girls track and field team ended the season by qualifying three athletes for the New England championships on June 9 at the University of New Hampshire. Sophomore Elise Russell had the best finish, earning all-New England honors with a sixth-place finish in the pole vault (10’9”).   The Joel Barlow boys volleyball team took top-seed Newington to the wire before falling in Thursday night’s Class M state championship match. Newington won the fifth game by two points to beat third-seed Barlow, 3-2, at Shelton High School and earn its second straight Class M title. Members of the Weston and Joel Barlow girls tennis team closed out the season earlier this week at the state individual tournament. Weston’s Ally D’Aquino reached the quarterfinals with three wins. Seeded 10th, she scored wins over Amber Raisner of Hall, 8-0, and Lauren Elmasry of Branford, 8-0, in the opening rounds. In the round of 16, she swept seventh-seeded Caitlin Sze of South Windsor, 6-2, 7-6. In the quarterfinals she lost to second-seeded (and eventual runner-up) Madeline DeNucci of Glastonbury, 6-1 6-0. The Joel Barlow boys volleyball team is back in the Class M championship match for the third time in four years, after a 3-1 victory over Lewis Mills on Monday in the semifinals at Kennedy High School in Waterbury. The third-seeded Falcons (15-7) play top-seeded Newington in the finals on Thursday at 5 in Shelton. Newington, the defending champ, swept South Windsor 3-0 in the semifinals. Hannah Ceva placed in three events and accounted for 12 of Joel Barlow’s 19 points as the Falcons finished 17th at last Wednesday’s Class MM girls track and field state championships in Middletown. Ceva was fourth in the 400 meters, fifth in the long jump and sixth in the triple jump. She had season-best efforts in both the long jump and triple jump.
