Ice hockey: Barlow, Weston, Abbott Tech joining forces

This winter, there will be a new cooperative boys hockey team taking the ice in the SWC/SCC Conference, as well as CIAC Division III. Joel Barlow, Weston and Abbott Tech of Danbury will be combining their players, with Barlow operating as the host team. “We’ll continue (as host) because we had the program last year,” Barlow athletic director Mike Santangeli said. “Since our numbers were decreasing, it was easiest to continue that way.” The Falcons are looking to have approximately 14 players, Weston six and Abbott Tech four. Boys soccer: Weston shuts out Stratford

The Weston High boys soccer team defeated Stratford High, 4-0, in a South-West Conference matchup. Mason Asphar scored in the 12th minute, followed by Tobey Bill, assisted by Asphar, in the 18th minute. Jack Fellowes then made it 3-0 in the 65th, before Max Weiss, assisted by Jacob Strouch, closed out the scoring in the 72nd minute. Weston outshot Stratford, 10-4.

Girls swim: Falcons pushed by Panthers

Having been involved in four somewhat lopsided meets to begin the season (three wins and a loss), Joel Barlow High’s girls swimming and diving team finally had a nail-biter in a 93-88 loss to host Masuk of Monroe on Tuesday. Although the Falcons were beaten, the meet served a good purpose in the eyes of coach Eileen Earle. “It was good for the girls to have tough competition,” said Earle, adding that her team also got acclimated to the atmosphere at Masuk’s pool, which will host the South-West Conference championships on Oct. 27. Girls soccer: Weston, ND-Fairfield draw

Weston High and Notre Dame of Fairfield tied 3-3 in a South-West Conference matchup. For the Trojans, Aiden Kreitler, Nicky Dalrymple and Julia Rosenberg netted the goals. Ava Poulopoulos, Amelia Rudolph and Ava Zielinski notched the assists. Bridget Angus made seven saves in net. Katarzyna Zawadski scored two goals for the Lancers, while Tassia Ferriera had the other. Tia Pascarelli made 10 saves in net. Weston’s moved to 8-1-2 overall.

Boys soccer: Falcons sink Green Wave

The Joel Barlow boys soccer team eked out a 1-0 win at New Milford in a South-West Conference contest. Barlow had most of the possession and chances in the game, but were made to work hard for the win by a game Green Wave outfit. Girls soccer: Newtown shuts out Weston

The Newtown High girls soccer team defeated Weston High, 1-0, in a South-West Conference matchup on Friday at Blue and Gold Stadium. Emma Curtis scored the game’s lone goal for the Nighthawks, who improved to 6-1-2 overall. Juliana Stavoia made one save to record the clean sheet in net. Bridget Angus made 15 saves for the Trojans, who suffered their first defeat of the season and fell to 8-1-1 overall.

Girls volleyball: Weston rallies past Stratford

Weston High’s girls volleyball team defeated visiting Stratford in four games on Wednesday night. The Trojans overcame a game one loss to prevail. After Stratford pulled out a nail-biting 25-23 game one decision, Weston won 25-20, 25-18, and 25-17. Kate Anderson had 18 kills, five aces. and two blocks. Kate Joyce compiled nine kills, seven aces and 14 digs. Taryn Seigel racked up 19 digs to go along with a trio of kills and one ace. Eliza Maestri tallied four kills and five digs.

Boys soccer: Weston upends Brookfield

The Weston High boys soccer team pinned a 4-1 defeat on Brookfield High in a South-West Conference showdown on Thursday. David Tamburri’s goal at 35:28 of the first half, assisted by Mason Asphar, broke a 1-1 tie. Henry Cohen, assisted by Brendan Moore, at 72:25 and Ryan Werner, assisted by Tamburri, at 74:52 provided the Trojans with insurance goals. Bruno Navaresse, assisted by Matt Scott, had the opening goal for Weston at 20:42. Weston keeper Matt Egan made 10 saves, as the Bobcats outshot Weston, 11-8. The Trojans improved to 8-0-0; Brookfield fell to 6-1-2.

Barlow announces 2018 athletic HOF class

Joel Barlow High School recently announced its 2018 Athletic Hall of Fame class. This years inductees will be honored at half time of the homecoming football game on Nov. 10. The game begins at 1 p.m. and the inductees will be honored at halftime. The inductees this year are: Kim Biechele; Dwight Bronson; David Carpenter; Paul Christiani; John Colley; Sara Cram; Kristen Emanuelson; Kristin Hanczor; Chrissy Millbauer; Evan Paushter; Jesse P.
