Spirits stay high at Special Olympics time trials, despite the rain

The rain may have forced several events to be cancelled, but it hardly dampened spirits at the Special Olympics Connecticut 2018 Southern Time Trials on Saturday at Weston High School. Athletes who have been training hard for months weren’t about to let the weather get in their way. “That’s the beautiful thing. All the athletes are so dedicated and resilient, and just so excited to be together. Special Olympics Southern Time Trials Saturday at Weston High

Special Olympics Connecticut will hold its 2018 Southern Time Trials presented by GE at Weston High School this Saturday, May 12, from 8:30 to 4. The event is free and all are invited to come out and cheer on the athletes. This annual event gives athletes of all abilities from the region opportunities to compete in track and field, swimming and tennis after months of training and preparation. More than 1,000 athletes and Unified Sports® partners are expected to participate. An additional 200 coaches and 600 volunteers are expected to support the event. Weston girls tennis team runs win streak to nine

The Weston High girls tennis team notched its third win of the week on Thursday with a 6-1 victory at Newtown. The Trojans, who have won nine straight matches, improved to 9-1 overall and 9-0 in the South-West Conference. Ally D’Aquino, Rachel Finkel, Lila Pocsik and Mariel Zech all won their singles matches in straight sets, as did the first doubles team of Claire DiMarco and Nicole Herman and third doubles team of Jordan Conlon and Charlotte Glick. Barlow lacrosse pancake breakfast March 3

The 18th Annual Joel Barlow High School Lacrosse Pancake Breakfast takes place on Saturday, March 3, from 9 to 11 in the Joel Barlow cafeteria. Volunteers will be serving a hearty breakfast of eggs, bacon, sausage, fruit, pastries and pancakes. Last year, volunteers flipped more than 600 pancakes and hopes are that number will double this year. Tickets for the breakfast are $7 per person. Lacrosse players are selling tickets, or they can be purchased the day of the event outside the Barlow cafeteria. Play Ball For All hosts clinic in Norwalk

Weston’s Play Ball For All in partnership with The Factory training center of Norwalk hosted a fun and fundamentals baseball clinic this past Sunday in Norwalk. The clinic hosted 35 program participants ages 8-13 from The Child Guidance Center of mid-Fairfield County for this free clinic. Play Ball For All’s mission is to bring the game of baseball to underserved youth in surrounding Fairfield county communities. The clinics are run by local volunteer coaches and are assisted by little league alumni acting as peer mentors at the clinics. Olympic gold medalist to give fencing demo at Weston Library

Galya Pundyk, an Olympic gold medalist in sabre fencing, will be hosting a free fencing demo at the Weston Public Library on Wednesday, Jan. 24, and Wednesday, Jan. 31. The demo runs from  7:30 to 8:15 on both nights. Pundyk was a member of the Ukranian national team that won the gold medal in sabre at the 2008 Summer Olympics. She is also a two-time gold and three-time silver World Champion.
