  The new head coach of the Joel Barlow boys basketball team won’t need a tour of the school. Pat Yerina, who previously coached the Falcons for five seasons in the late 1980s and early 1990s, has been hired to replace Matt Whelan. Whelan recently announced he was leaving to become head coach of the Norwalk High boys basketball team. Yerina, a former standout player at Fairfield University, has been the head coach at Bunnell High in Stratford for the last 21 years. Redding C.C. members raise $4,000 for First Tee

On Saturday, May 26, before the sun peeked over the horizon, eight hearty souls with 35 pounds of “sticks” on their backs embarked on a 22.5-mile journey through the rolling hills of Redding. Their mission: to raise money for the First Tee, a national charitable organization whose mission is to impact the lives of young people by providing educational programs that build character, instill life-enhancing values and promote healthy choices through the game of golf. American Legion baseball: Weinbrum’s no-hitter highlights week for Post 86

The Wilton Post 86 American Legion Senior baseball team improved to 7-2 last Thursday with a 10-0 win over Fairfield. It was their ninth game in 10 days to open the season. The team includes three Weston players: Scott Lyon, Ryan Orefice and Andrew Weinbrum. In Thursday’s win, Weinbrum threw a no-hitter, continuing the team’s incredible pitching over the first nine games. The Weston Babe Ruth team won the Fairfield County championship on Father’s Say at Kiwanis field in Fairfield. Weston boys track: Lautenbach sixth at Open

The Weston boys track and field team closed out the season with three postseason meets, capped off by the New England championships earlier this month. The Trojans scored a total of 33.5 points to finish in seventh place at the Class MM meet on May 30 at Middletown High School. Perennial power Hillhouse captured the championship with 81.5 points. The Weston girls track and field team ended the season by qualifying three athletes for the New England championships on June 9 at the University of New Hampshire. Just shy of two years ago, Weston Parks and Recreation brought in a new program director to supplant a position that had been heralded for more than 40 years by Bill Schaeffer. Joe Parciasepe’s goal had always been to revamp the department’s summer camps. Weston’s Play Ball For All will host its next free youth fun and fundamentals baseball clinic on Saturday, June 16, at Morehouse Field in Weston. The clinic will host more than 40 young program participants, ages 8-13, from the Child Guidance Center of Mid-Fairfield County, based in Norwalk.
