This winter, there will be a new cooperative boys hockey team taking the ice in the SWC/SCC Conference, as well as CIAC Division III. Joel Barlow, Weston and Abbott Tech of Danbury will be combining their players, with Barlow operating as the host team. “We’ll continue (as host) because we had the program last year,” Barlow athletic director Mike Santangeli said. “Since our numbers were decreasing, it was easiest to continue that way.” The Falcons are looking to have approximately 14 players, Weston six and Abbott Tech four. The Weston High boys soccer team defeated Stratford High, 4-0, in a South-West Conference matchup. Mason Asphar scored in the 12th minute, followed by Tobey Bill, assisted by Asphar, in the 18th minute. Jack Fellowes then made it 3-0 in the 65th, before Max Weiss, assisted by Jacob Strouch, closed out the scoring in the 72nd minute. Weston outshot Stratford, 10-4.
The Weston High girls volleyball team swept New Fairfield on Tuesday in a South-West Conference matchup. The Trojans posted wins of 25-8, 25-8 and 25-12. Leading the way for Weston (7-4 overall, 4-1 in the SWC) was Kate Anderson with 11 kills and four digs. Jordan Baisely added three kills, three aces and four digs and Kate Joyce notched nine aces and two kills. Kelly Rosemann had 15 assists, one kill and one ace.
The Weston High girls soccer team defeated visiting Bunnell High, 2-1, on Thursday in a South-West Conference contest. Nicky Dalrymple and Katie Orefice scored the Trojan goals, while Olivia Kells had the Bulldog marker. Rebecca Strouch assisted on both Weston goals. Keeper Bridget Angus made three saves for Weston (6-0-1). Bunnell dropped to 1-6-0.
The Weston High boys soccer team shut out New Milford High, 2-0, in a South-West Conference matchup on Monday afternoon. Senior captain Ryan Werner scored the opener for the Trojans in the 31st minute, with an assist from senior Bruno Navaresse. Navaresse then netted a goal in the 75th minute, assisted by senior Tony Fontana. Weston senior captain Matt Egan made six saves in net. The Trojans improved to 4-0-0 overall.
The Weston High football team used splash plays, one to close out the first half and another to open the second, to fuel its 35-7 victory over visiting Jonathan Law on Friday night. The Weston High girls soccer team continued its torrid start to the season on Tuesday afternoon, posting a 9-1 victory over Kolbe Cathedral at a rain-swept Veterans Park in Bridgeport. Nicky Dalrymple powered the Trojans with three goals, Abigail Miles added a brace and Katie Orefice, Taylor Werner, Lianne Saussy and Rachel Esslinger netted single markers. The Weston High football team rode a dominant defensive effort to a 35-0 victory over visiting New Milford High in the South-West Conference season-opener for both squads on Friday night. Turnovers forced by the Trojans on the Green Wave’s first two possessions set the tone, with Jack Sawyer intercepting a pass from Jack Snowdon and returning it 60 yards for a touchdown at the 9:03 mark of the opening frame.
