Gymnastics: Umhoefer wins all-around title at regionals

Ashley Umhoefer of Weston was the all-around champion in her age division at the 2018 YMCA Northeast Regional Championships held May 11-13 in Augusta, Maine. Competing in the Level 6, Ages 9-11 division, she took home the first-place all-around trophy along with the title of vault champion (9.325). She was also second on bars (9.4) and third on beam (9.4), and scored 9.2 on floor. Her performance helped the Wilton Y gymnastics Level 6 squad finish fourth out of 21 teams at the meet.

Weston laxboys lose in OT; girls golf falls to Newtown

The Weston High boys lacrosse and girls golf teams suffered losses on Monday. Boys lacrosse Fairfield Ludlowe 12, Weston 11 (OT) The Weston boys lacrosse team rallied from a 6-3 halftime deficit to tie its non-league game at Fairfield Ludlowe on Monday night, before falling in overtime 12-11. The Trojans ended the regular season 13-3 overall, and 8-2 in the South-West Conference. Weston will host a SWC quarterfinal game on Thursday night at 7. Softball: Weston falls to New Milford for fourth loss in a row

Visiting New Milford jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the top of the first, and blew the game open with nine runs in the fourth, en route to a 13-7 win over the Weston softball team on Monday. The Trojans dropped to 5-14 with the loss, their fourth in a row. Maddie Culkin was 2-for-3 with  double, home run, walk, four RBI and two runs to highlight the Weston offense. The Weston High baseball team’s postseason hopes will come down to Tuesday’s regular-season finale, after the Trojans lost to New Milford at home on Monday, 5-2. The Trojans (7-12) need a win over Brookfield at home on Tuesday to qualify for the state playoffs. Steven Horwath and Connor Gannon held Weston to six hits and two runs on Monday, with Horwath getting the win for New Milford. Dan Covino was 2-for-4 and scored a run for Weston. The Weston boys and girls tennis both advanced to the South-West Conference championship match on Wednesday, after decisive semifinal wins at home on Monday. The Weston boys swept Brookfield 7-0 to improve its record to 15-3. The top-seeded Trojans will take on second-seeded Joel Barlow on Wednesday (3:30) at home. The Weston girls (15-4) reached the finals with a 7-0 sweep of Newtown in the semifinals at home. The Trojans will also face Barlow in the finals on Wednesday in Weston. The Weston High girls lacrosse team made it five wins in a row on Monday with a 15-7 win over Bunnell at home. The Trojans finished the regular season with a final record of 9-7 overall and 7-5 in the South-West Conference. Next up will be the SWC quarterfinals on Thursday night on the road, mostly likely at Joel Barlow. In Monday’s win, Gracie Toner led the scoring with five goals and two assists. Weston boys golf team wins Patriot League title

The Weston High boys golf team defeated Immaculate by two strokes, 171-173, on Monday at Aspetuck Valley Country Club to clinch the regular-season Patriot League championship. The victory raised Weston’s league record to 10-1 and its overall mark to 12-1. Matt Lagana shared medalist honors with Immaculate star Jack Woods, shooting a season-best 38 and playing his last six holes in one-under par. Track: Murphy breaks Weston mile record

Three individual performers and two relay teams from the Weston High track and field team qualified for the 51st Glenn D. Loucks Games, held last week at White Plains (N.Y.) High School. One of the most prestigious track and field meets in the country, the games were held May 10-12. Kathleen Murphy provided the highlight for the Trojans, placing seventh in the mile run with a time of 5:07.75 that set a new school record. Spirits stay high at Special Olympics time trials, despite the rain

The rain may have forced several events to be cancelled, but it hardly dampened spirits at the Special Olympics Connecticut 2018 Southern Time Trials on Saturday at Weston High School. Athletes who have been training hard for months weren’t about to let the weather get in their way. “That’s the beautiful thing. All the athletes are so dedicated and resilient, and just so excited to be together. Girls lacrosse: Trojans down Green Wave for fourth win in a row

Slow starts had been an issue for the Weston High girls lacrosse team earlier this season, and it’s been something the Trojans have been focusing on in recent weeks. On Friday night at home against New Milford, they were able to see the results — and it was encouraging.
