With Rebecca Candee leading the way, the Joel Barlow girls ski team began the 2018 season with an impressive performance on Wednesday afternoon at Mount Southington.
The Falcons had a team time of 296.13 seconds to go unbeaten in head-to-head competition and finish second overall out of 11 teams. Only Weston (292.11 seconds) was faster than Barlow.
No one was faster than Candee, who finished first overall with a two-run combined time of 44.96 seconds. Candee’s second run (21.84) was the only one of the day under 22 seconds.
Morgan Devine added a top-10 finish for Barlow, placing seventh overall in a time of 47.16 seconds.
Also contributing to Barlow’s team score were Madigan Stichter (18th, 48.99), Katelyn Kuczmarski (26th, 50.16), Sarah Chlodnicki (28th, 51.33), and Miah Cooper (39th, 53.53).
The Barlow boys team also started its season on Wednesday at Mount Southington. The Falcons were eighth overall in a field of 13 teams with a time of 307.73 seconds.
Barlow’s top individual finisher was Robert Hebner, who placed 28th overall in a two-run combined time of 48.07 seconds.
Spencer Katzmann (41st, 49.05), Dennis Canada (47th, 49.96), Christian Perry (63rd, 51.84), Nathaniel Demelis (72nd, 54.10), and Jack Eskeland (75th, 54.71) also contributed to the Falcons’ team score.
Notes: The Barlow girls (6-0) got head-to-head wins over Ridgefield, Danbury, Guilford, Hand, Westhill, and Southington.
The Barlow boys (5-3) defeated Southington, Guilford, Westhill, Danbury, and Gilbert Northwest Regional but lost to Ridgefield, Hand, and Brunswick Academy.
