A two-hit pitching effort from Caitlin Colangelo and the speed of Abby Ota combined to propel the Joel Barlow softball team to a 2-1 home win over Newtown on Monday afternoon. Barlow improved to 10-2 overall with the victory, while Newtown saw its six-game winning streak end and fell to 8-4. Colangelo was in command throughout and allowed just one walk, striking out three batters. “She’s starting to understand more and more how to pitch; how to hit your spots and mix speeds,” said Barlow coach Craig Sears about Colangelo. Girls golf: Weston comes up just short against Masuk

The Weston High girls golf team gave unbeaten Masuk a battle before losing by five strokes, 217 to 223, on Monday at Aspetuck Valley Country Club. The Trojans (4-4) were led by Sarah Johnson with a score of 50, followed by Halley Melito (53), Carolyn Zech (58) and Abby West (62). Masuk (5-0) had the medalist for the day in Emma Michetti with a 46, followed by Kaitlyn Logan (53), Hannah Epifino (57) and Lindsay Breyan (61)

Baseball: Kolbe shuts down Trojans, 5-2

Kolbe Cathedral scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning and that held up for a 5-2 win over the Weston High baseball team Monday. The Trojans (5-7) had only five hits. Asa Forest took the loss, going three innings and allowing five runs (four earned) on seven hits and two walks. He struck out six. Andi Icatar pitched a two-hitter to lead the Weston High softball team to a 16-1 win in five innings at Kolbe Cathedral on Monday. Icatar walked three and struck out four. The Cougars’ lone run was unearned. Sammy Phillips and Jordan Klebenow each had a home run for the Trojans, who improved their record to 4-7. Weston jumped out quickly with four runs in the top of the first, capped off by Phillips’ three-run homer to centerfield. The Joel Barlow boys and girls tennis teams continued their undefeated seasons with victories on Monday. Playing on its home court, the Barlow boys swept Bethel, 7-0, in an abbreviated contest: Due to weather concerns, each match was shortened to one, eight-game set. Barlow improved its record to 6-0 with the win. The Falcons got singles triumphs from Eric Raut (8-1), Noah Sobel (8-2), Jake Bernard (8-6), and Jackson Connor (8-6). Barlow students gather to watch mock car crash

The entire student body at Joel Barlow High School watched up close Monday morning as more than two dozen emergency responders from Redding and Easton participated in a mock car crash. The sounds of the crash, ending with the impact between two cars, were played on an audio system. Police then lifted a covering to reveal the two damaged cars. Sitting on the ground in the crisp morning air, students watched as their peers — six Barlow seniors — played out different roles. Easton’s Annual Town Meeting will be held tonight, Monday, April 30, at 7 p.m. at Samuel Staples Elementary School. The agenda is available on the town website. All items will be discussed at the meeting.
